How does it work?
The laser emits a powerful, highly focused beam of light. The energy from this laser is absorbed by the ink particles in the skin. This breaks open the capsule surrounding the ink, causing it to fragment into smaller particles.
With each treatment, part of the pigment is gradually removed through the lymphatic system. This makes the tattoo fade step by step.
Tip: drinking plenty of water or tea helps the body remove the released pigment particles.
How many treatments are needed?
The number of treatments varies from person to person, but on average 5 to 15 sessions are needed. It is difficult to predict the exact number in advance, as it depends on factors such as:
- The color(s) of the ink pigment
- The type of ink used
- The dept of the tattoo
- Whether the tattoo was applied by an amateur or a professional
- The age of the tattoo
Is tattoo removal safe?
The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) regularly conducts extensive research into the substances that are released from a tattoo. Laser treatments for tattoo removal have been performed since the 1980s, and over this period no harmful side effects resulting from the release of these substances have been reported in scientific literature.
Immediately after the treatment, small white dots (a “snow effect”) may often be visible, slightly raised on the skin. This usually disappears after about 15–20 minutes. Redness and mild swelling may occur a few minutes later, but these typically fade within a few hours.
